Steve de Kruijff OAM

Retired – former COO Copper Assets Australia for Glencore, Former president of QRC

Steve’s mining career spans over four decades. Commencing his career as a prospector he has worked in the fields of exploration and mining geology, business development, and mine management culminating his mining industry position as Chief Operating Officer – Copper Assets Australia for Glencore.

Steve now runs a small beef cattle farm and a coffee roasting and distribution business and Chairs the Mount Isa Water Board.

Steve is a past President of the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) and in 2016 was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for service to the mining industry and to the community.

He is also a past recipient of the prestigious AusIMM Jim Torlack Health and Safety award.

Introducing our 2024 Speakers

This year, we are doing a deep dive into the Pipeline projects in and around Mount Isa in the North West Minerals Province.

Speakers from a variety of these pipeline projects will be presenting about their activities and where their projects are up to. For some, they are in exploration phase, for others it's pre-production and for others its diversifying and developing current deposits. We will be hearing about partnerships that are being signed to ensure productivity and viability.

Edward Fry

Exploration Manager - Renegade Exploration

Geology professional with over 15 years’ experience across China, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. Previous roles with Golden Tiger, Artemis Resources, MIL Resources, Convergent Minerals, and Rockfire Resources. Completed his geology degree at UQ, where his honours project detailed the structural evolution and mineralization style of the Kalman Mo-Co-Au deposit.

Trevor Shaw

Manager Australian Exploration MIM Resource Development Mount Isa Mines – A Glencore Company

Trevor Shaw is an Exploration Geologist with more than 25 years’ resources industry experience. As the Manager – Australian Exploration for Glencore’s Queensland Metals, Trevor oversees all aspects of the exploration strategy and operations across the Mount Isa Mines assets.

Over the past 17 years, Trevor’s exploration team explored tenements throughout the Mount Isa Inlier, managing Joint Ventures over 10,000km2 of tenure in North West Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. Current exploration efforts are primarily focussed towards the discovery of satellite feed, Life of Asset extensions for the Queensland Metals Mining and Metallurgical assets with a renewed focus upon Greenfields Zn and Cu Exploration from Mt Isa to McArthur River.

Trevor serves on the QRC Exploration and Tenures Committee, the Advisory Board for the Centre of Ore Deposits and Earth Sciences (CODES) – University of Tasmania, and as the Advisory Board Chair for the Economic Geology Research Centre – (EGRU) – James Cook University.

Sarah Gooley

Director, Queensland, AMEC (Association of Mining and Exploration Companies)

Sarah has 20 years’ experience in operational, policy, advisory and management roles in the Queensland Government. In recent years Sarah has held the position of AMEC’s Queensland Director and has advocated successfully for junior and mid-tier explorers and miners in Queensland. Sarah has also consulted in the exploration and mining sector. Sarah strongly believes in the long-term future of our resources sector and looks forward to working with our members and team.

Courteney Dhnaram

CEI Grants Manager – Industry Engagement. Geological Survey of Queensland

Courteney Dhnaram is the Collaborative Exploration Initiative (CEI) Grants Manager with the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ) in the Department of Resources. Previously with the Mineral Systems team at GSQ as an economic geologist and now in her current role, Courteney enjoys working alongside Academia and Industry to help inform research outcomes and facilitate mineral exploration in the State.

Justine Cole

Business Development officer and TAFE at Schools Engagement Coordinator

Justine Cole, fulfils two roles in the North West Region as Business Development officer and TAFE at Schools Engagement Coordinator. In both of these roles Justine Manages a multitude of stakeholders , employers, community groups, schools, parents and students. Justine also promotes and upholds the narrative and delivery of quality training for TAFE Queensland.

We provide pathways for our students into employment. We provide Training and Knowledge that Changes peoples lives. Justine will be presenting what we have on offer at the Mount Isa Campus for year 11 and year 12, 2025 TAFE at School student and how these courses can lead into apprenticeships.

Andrew Barker

Exploration Manager - Maronan Metals

Andrew Barker is a Geologist with 15 years experience across the Exploration and Resource Definition space. He spent 10 years working in Kalgoorlie on Archean gold deposits. More recently he has been the Exploration Superintendent at Evolution’s Cowal Mine in NSW. Andrew’s current role is Exploration Manager for Maronan Metals, an ASX listed junior explorer, who aim to turn a discovery into a mine in elephant country.

The Maronan Project is located in the prolific Carpentaria Province of north-west Queensland. With a recently announced update to the Resource, Maronan have a strong basis to push towards mining. Maronan defined a maiden Silver-Lead indicated resource within the Starter Zone, which is a focus area for initial mine development. Andrew will be providing us with an update on the Maronan Project and outline Maronan’s plans as they push towards development.

Suzanne Shipp

General Manager of Operations & Maintenance -APA Group

Suzanne Shipp, General Manager of Operations & Maintenance for APA Group has over 30 years of industry experience. She is responsible for a national and diverse portfolio of assets including renewable energy, gas fired power generation, gas transmission, storage and processing including the assets in the North West Power System such as Diamantina Power Station. Suzanne leads a team of over 550 people and is passionate about developing high performing teams and career development for her team. Suzanne has had a interesting career, starting her journey in the Australian Army before moving into the energy sector. Suzanne is looking forward to hosting the “Careers in Industry” panel during the North West MPX.

Johannes Van Heerden

Group Chief Operating Officer - Business Development & Growth - Harmony SE Asia

Johannes was appointed Group Chief Operating Officer, Business Development and Growth in February 2023. His focus includes leading the Eva Copper Mine Project into development, progressing the Wafi-Golpu Project in Papua New Guinea (a joint venture with Newmont) and pursuing further growth opportunities in Africa, South East Asia and Australia.

Johannes joined Harmony in 1998 and was appointed the Chief Financial Officer for Harmony South East Asia in 2003. Prior to his current role, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Harmony’s South East Asia operations from 2008 to 2023

Grant Ballantyne

Director, Technical Solutions - Ausenco

Grant has 15 years of mineral processing experience in design, optimisation, operation, research, and development. He coordinates the development, innovation and assessment of new technologies and flowsheet strategies for the international comminution group at Ausenco. He also provides critical input at the front-end of engineering design projects, consults with operations, and assesses the economics of enhanced process technologies such as coarse particle flotation and bulk ore sorting. Grant is also a leader in assessing and improving ESG outcomes for projects.

Fran Burgess

Process Manager, QLD - Ausenco

Fran is a metallurgist with more than 40 years’ experience in the mining industry. She has an extensive operational background in running mines, mineral processing plants and smelters, most notably the lead smelter at Mt Isa. Fran believes that you create your own miracles from determination and hard work and has done so many times in her career, such as significant zinc recovery improvement at Pasminco Elura Mine using stirred mill detritors, the ramp up of Pasminco Century to achieve the planned recovery regardless of the feed grade and the feed tonnage, and changing the safety culture at a zinc processing plant in Mount Isa and Zinifex Rosebery Mine.

Tim Rose

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Mount Isa City Council

Tim Rose is the current Acting Chief Executive Officer of Mount Isa City Council. He is a former CEO of Local Buy Pty Ltd, Burnett Shire Council and Bowen Shire Council, as well as a former acting CEO of Diamantina Shire, Mapoon Aboriginal Shire, and Quilpie Shire councils.

Tim will be presenting on the Mount Isa City Council response to the closure of Glencore's copper mine and concentrator. This will include a discussion on the economic diversification work that the council is looking at, and he will also touch on the need for long term reliable sources of acid for the entire North West Minerals Province.

Gavin Loyden

Gavin Loyden, Managing Director, QEM Limited

Gavin Loyden is the Founder and Managing Director of QEM Limited, having identified and acquired the significant dual commodity resource at Julia Creek. Mr Loyden is responsible for QEM’s capitalisation, exploration program and development of QEM’s flagship vanadium and oil shale project. Prior to founding QEM, Mr Loyden assisted a range of companies from early stage development through to international stock market listings.

He has over a decade of experience in the mining industry and extensive experience in the structuring of capital raising proposals for both private and public companies, executive selection, and Corporate Governance. Mr Loyden is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Minister Scott Stuart MP

Queensland Minister for Resources and Critical Minerals and Member for Townsville

Scott Stewart is the Queensland Minister for Resources and Critical Minerals and Member for Townsville. As Minister for Resources and Critical Minerals, he is responsible for one of the state’s largest industries, which supports more than 75,000 good jobs and is worth $74 billion dollars to the Queensland economy.

In 2022, Minister Stewart launched the Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan. The plan sets out a clear 30-year vision for the sector with a focus on Queensland becoming a global leader in supplying critical minerals and ESG credentialing. The Minister is passionate about the future of mining in Queensland and launched the Queensland Critical Minerals Strategy at the World Mining Congress in Brisbane in 2023.

During his time as Minister for Resources, he has overseen the largest increase in minerals exploration since 2011 and continues to be a strong advocate for new and existing projects in government. He has strong personal ties to the resources sector and is a proud great grandson to Walter John Davidson who was one of the original Mount Isa mine workers in the 1920s.

Before entering Parliament as the Member for Townsville in 2015, Minister Stewart worked in education for 28 years; serving as a principal and teacher in several state high schools. Upon his election in October 2015, he served as the Chair of the Education, Tourism, Innovation and Small Business Committee and as deputy speaker. Minister Stewart is a strong and active leader within the community. He understands and appreciates the value of education and sees it as the key to success. He holds a Bachelor of Education and a master's degree from the Queensland University of Technology.

Nicholas Huffels

Non-Executive Director - Mount Isa Minerals

Nick is a highly experienced corporate executive and consultant based in Melbourne with nearly 30 years of senior-level experience in the resources and metals industry, the majority of which has been in resources and metals marketing.

He brings deep market and business strategy knowledge across a range of commodities, including having held senior executive positions at WMC and BHP Marketing, and more recently +10 years Strategy Consulting at all levels of enterprise.

John Cotter

Managing Director, North West Phosphate

He has more than 20 years’ experience in major projects across Australia and is a recognised expert in the field of infrastructure planning.

Having been raised on a cattle property west of Gympie, John brings to the role a unique understanding of the importance of investing in agriculture, resources and drought proofing regions as a key pillar for economic growth and it is for that reason that he was a seed investor in North West Phosphate. John has continued to fund the development of North West Phosphate and committed to improving fertilisers for farming regions across Queensland and Australia

After working in private practice and listed property, he founded the Flinders Group, a specialised project management consulting firm which grew to over 150 staff across Australia. In 2014 Flinders Group was sold to global engineering firm Arcadis. In 2016, John founded Initiative Capital to provide private equity and expertise to infrastructure.

John has a Bachelor of Urban Planning, a Masters in Applied Finance and a Diploma of Project Management. He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director as the Royal Agricultural and Industry Association.

Dr Janelle Kerr

Director Minerals Geoscience with the Geological Survey of Queensland

Dr Janelle Kerr is the Director Minerals Geoscience with the Geological Survey of Queensland in the Department of Resources.

A geophysicist by background, Janelle currently oversees delivery of government geoscience initiatives like the New Economy Minerals Initiative, focused on supporting exploration and discovery of critical mineral resources across Queensland.

Kim Grey

Exploration Manager - Red Metal Limited

Kim is Exploration Manager for Red Metal Limited (ASX:RDM), who have been active in the Mount Isa and Cloncurry area for over 20 years.

Prior to joining RDM two years ago, Kim has had over 30 years’ experience in various exploration, development and mining roles in the NT, Qld, and in PNG.

RDM has a number of exciting copper-gold exploration projects in the Mount Isa region, a 53% holding in Maronan Metals (ASX:MMA) which is advancing the large Maronan silver-lead copper-gold deposit near Cloncurry, and a funding alliance with copper major Oz Minerals (now BHP).

In the past year RDM made a significant new rare earth discovery on the Sybella Project, only 20km SW of Mount Isa. Sybella has rapidly advanced from “proof of concept” drilling and metallurgical test work to step-out resource drilling, which is currently in progress.

This unique granite-hosted deposit has rare earths hosted in readily-soluble fluoro-carbonate minerals allowing excellent recoveries of the magnet rare earth elements with a modest acid requirement. Importantly, work to date suggests the new Sybella discovery could be a heap leachable source of rare earth oxide minerals with the potential for highly competitive capital and operating costs, and a potential new long-life mining opportunity for the community of Mount Isa.

Elliott York

Incitec Pivot Fertilisers Program Manager, Northern Australian Operations Strategic Projects

Elliott has held various leadership and operational roles with Incitec Pivot Fertilisers (IPF) for 15 years.

Working across several facilities, including IPF’s Mount Isa Sulphuric Acid plant and Phosphate Hill plant operations, Elliott has held a variety of maintenance, engineering, and capital project roles.

Currently, Elliott IPF’s Program Manager, Northern Australian Operations Strategic Projects.

Peter Ware

Incitec Pivot Fertilisers Vice President, Operations

Peter is a passionate supporter of manufacturing and the regions the industry supports and has more than 25 years’ experience managing and operating fertiliser manufacturing facilities in Australia and South Africa.

Currently Incitec Pivot Fertilisers (IPF) Vice President, Operations, Peter is responsible for overseeing all IPF manufacturing and distribution operations in Australia.

He brings to the role extensive technical and managerial expertise, along with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

Peter has held a number of other roles with IPF and Incitec Pivot Limited including Site Manager and Site Senior Executive for IPF’s Phosphate Hill Operation in the Cloncurry Shire.

Peter has called Australia home for just over 10 years after moving from his homeland of South Africa.

Marty Costello

Managing Director, True North Copper

Marty is a founder and Managing Director of True North Copper. He has been leading TNC for more than two years as the company evolves from start-up to mining.

Mining commenced at the Cloncurry Copper Project in 2024 and an extensive exploration program is delivering discovery success across TNC’s more than 850 sq km of tenure package across the world-class Mt Isa Inlier, including TNC’s highly prospective and underexplored Mt Oxide Project.

Marty has over 20 years of experience across Australia's resource sector, focusing on project development and sustainability. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping environmental and sustainability strategies across the resource sector.

After establishing Northern Resource Consultants (NRC), a consultancy that became a key player in environmental and sustainability solutions, he led it to acquisition by global leader SLR in 2018. This move expanded SLR's capabilities in the Asia Pacific and underscored Marty's impact on the industry, especially through his long-term strategic role with clients like Evolution Mining.

PRESENTATION SUMMARY True North Copper is Australia’s newest copper producer with mining and sulphide production commencing in 2024 at its Cloncurry Copper Project, with free cash flow of $111M AUD forecast for the first 4.6 years of current mine life. TNC’s Managing Director Marty Costello will discuss the True North journey so far and what the future strategy is for TNC’s more than 850 sq km tenure package across the world class Mt Isa Inlier. He will also provide an insight into the project TNC plans to make its next mine – the Mt Oxide Project. Located 140km north of Mt Isa this project has delivered exceptional drilling results across TNC’s maiden 2023 Mt Oxide - Vero Resource drilling program including 66.5m @ 4.95% Cu.

Rob Kirtlan

Director and Chairman- Renegade Exploration

Robert is a former finance professional working for major investment banks in Sydney and New York focussing on global mining.

Involved in the mining industry for approximately 35 years arranging equity and debt financing for junior and major mining companies from exploration to production. Several prior companies were successful with ultimate asset development and production.

Renegade Exploration Limited (ASX:RNX) is an Australian based minerals exploration company developing a portfolio of advanced copper and gold projects in north-west Queensland. Renegade’s current focus is the Cloncurry Project located in mining infrastructure-rich Cloncurry. In January 2023, Renegade reached an agreement with Carpentaria Joint Venture partner Mount Isa Mines (MIM) to become sole operator and funder of the project, which is very advanced in terms of exploration activity.

Recently the Company completed some work on the Carpentaria Joint Venture ground near Mary Kathleen which has yielded high-grade graphite plus rare earths. This project is of significant interest to Renegade. The company expanded its north-west Queensland operations with a 75% interest in a joint venture on the North Isa Project, located just north of MIM’s George Fisher mining operations near Mount Isa. Renegade has drilled one target and has planned geophysical work in the coming months at a large prospect just 35km north of Mt Isa.

Renegade maintains a base in both Mt Isa and Cloncurry from where it operates utilising as many local contractors as possible.
